Ever since we moved to Asia, all the locals and expats recommended that we should travel to other Asian countries or islands since it’s so close by and very affordable. So my husband and I decided to take a road trip to Penang Island which is one of the many islands in Malaysia. Penang is the food capital of Malaysia and also know throughout Asia for its amazing and affordable food, in particular the hawker stalls. I had always wanted to go to Penang after watching Anthony Bourdain’s show No Reservations where he indulges in all the yummy looking food.
During our stay in Penang, my hubby booked us a suite in a very cute boutique hotel called Seven Terraces in the middle of Georgetown. The hotel was beautiful and elegant and the decor felt as though we had stepped back in time during the Chinese Dynasty era. Once we entered our suite I fell in love with our room. The colors were so vibrant, with bright red and gold furniture, antique vases and artwork scattered throughout the room. I loved that the fridge was always fully stocked with water and different types of yummy juices whenever we were thirsty. We had such a relaxing time in our hotel while enjoying our complimentary breakfast every morning and relaxing our tired feet after a long day of walking by getting a poolside foot massage.
Once we arrived in Penang we immediately saw the cultural diversity of Indian, Chinese and Malaysian throughout the island. Penang is a beautiful island with streets filled with bright vibrant colors of food, flowers and people. We stopped by food stands to try food we never had, took tour of a temple, walked along the beach, and just explored our way around. It was great that we were able to spot so many different types of graffiti art along our exploration of the island. I loved that the artist was able to incorporate actual items against the wall with the graffiti.
AHHHHH!!!!! Penang is definitely a foodie galore. Everywhere you walk there is a plethora of food . I ate and drank everything from fresh fruit smoothie, seafood, filipino food, curry, steamboats and their famous char kuey teow. I was so full every night from eating everything in my sight. It’s amazing watching everyone line up at certain Hawker stalls to eat their specialty from Pan Mee noodles to different type of noodle soups. All the tables are packed with hungry patrons, both locals and other tourist, all ready to fill their stomach.
